Inca Trail Daily Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Begin the Trek

TheClassic Inca Trail Trek begins in Cusco, the company will collect from your hotel early in the morning, between 4:00 to 5:00 am. Afterward, you will drive an hour and half to reach Ollanttaytambo where all the groups stops to use restroom, relax your legs, or take a quick breakfast. Continuing, you will drive for another hour to reach Piscacucho Village, also know as Km 82 nestled at 2,709 meters above sea level. Here you will check with your passport and ticket.

The hike on the first day is not demanding, you will hike for about 6 or 7 hours in total. This part of the trail is not difficult. Obviously you will have many stops along the way to visit some archaeological sites, lunch, and local shops. The end of the hike will be at Wayllabamba 2,950 meters.

Day 2: Conquering the Dead Woman’s Pass

The second day is widely considered the most challenging, as trekkers ascend to the highest point of the trail, Dead Woman’s Pass, located at over 4,200 meters (13,820 feet) about sea level. The climb is steep and demanding, but the sense of achievement and the panoramic mountain views make the effort worthwhile. After reaching the summit, the trail descends into the lush Pacaymayo Valley, where hikers spend the night.

Day 3: Through the Cloud Forest

On the third day, the landscape shifts dramatically. The trail winds through cloud forest and high jungle, passing a series of impressive Inca archaeological sites such as Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, and Phuyupatamarca. As the day progresses, the trail becomes more lush and verdant, eventually leading to Wiñay Wayna, one of the most beautiful and well-preserved ruins on the route. This is the final campsite before reaching Machu Picchu.

Day 4:Sunrise at Machu Picchu and Departure

The final day begins before dawn, as trekkers hike the last stretch of the trail in darkness to arrive at the Sun Gate at sunrise. As the mist lifts, Machu Picchu is revealed in the golden morning light—a truly unforgettable moment. After a guided tour of the citadel, hikers descend to Aguas Calientes for lunch or exploration before taking a train back to Cusco, filled with memories of one of the world’s most iconic treks.
